The intention of this research project is to create a collection of «parallel» artworks realized from ‘exhibition labels’ collected from diverse museums, galleries and art institutions.
These labels are hijacked from their first function (to caption / to categorize an artwork) and used as constraint and production tools for creating new artpieces.

The new pieces are based on the informations provided by the labels: title, dimension, materials. Thus, i create drawings, paintings, sculptures, installations, ceramics, videos, ... that have the same charactaristics as the original artworks.

Applying the labels as if they were partitions of a piece and taking the opposite direction of archiving: using the legend and the categorization/mediation system as a starting point for visual research and ‘excavation’ until the emergence of a new art shape/form.

With this project, I wish to end up with a pannel of mismatched artworks linked by the concept, and the aesthetic sensitivity of my interpretation.

This research aims to question our relationship to archiving, to the uniqueness and the multiple meanings of the works of art.

I have received support for the labels from institutions like the Wiels, the MAC’s, the M Museum Leuven and Centrale Electrique in Belgium, the Tate Modern and the Whitechapel Gallery in the UK, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Van Abbe museum, the Witte de With in the Netherlands.
