‘Un Cabinet d’amateur’ is a luminous installation. Every one to three seconds, it switches on and off at random. The foreground is a mirror without silvering.
When the piece is illuminated, the mirror lets a sort of small gallery appear, full of the reproductions of some major paintings from the XVth to the XXieth century which are reflected ad infinitum by a mirror illusion.
When the light is off, it throws the viewer back to his own primary look.
The purpose of this work was to interrogate the status of the Masterpiece in the art history, the relationship people maintain with such icons.
The pictures show a view of the installation on, off and a detail of the inside when it’s on.
